Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Alge Crumpler's 30-yard touchdown reception with just 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave the Atlanta Falcons a 20-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.
With the game tied late, Carolina punted the ball to Adam Jennings with about a minute left and he returned the ball 23 yards to the 50-yard-line. From there, Joey Harrington moved his team to the 30-yard-line and then found Crumpler wide open over the middle and he rumbled untouched into the end zone.
"We were just trying to get 15 or 20 yards and finished up with a field goal and they were blitzing up the middle which left the play wide open," explained Crumpler.
Warrick Dunn ran for 89 yards with a touchdown for the Falcons (3-6), who have won two straight after three consecutive losses. Dunn also added three receptions for 51 yards.
Harrington was an efficient 19-of-26 passing for 192 yards with a touchdown while Roddy White had six catches for 57 yards in the victory.
Vinny Testaverde, playing with an ankle injury, threw for 153 yards on 13- of-28 passing for the Panthers (4-5), who have lost their last three games.
"We had a game plan and Vinny executed the best he could," said Carolina head coach John Fox. "I think he had some soreness. As I've mentioned before, there are a lot of guys in the NFL with soreness at this stage of the season. He was healthy enough to play."
DeShaun Foster carried the ball 20 times for 59 yards while Steve Smith had 61 yards on five catches.
With the game tied in the final quarter, the Falcons took a 13-10 lead with 11:35 to play after the ageless wonder Morten Andersen kicked a 47-yard field goal.
Carolina though managed to tie it back up as Testaverde led a 10-play, 66-yard drive that ended with John Kasay's 31-yard field goal to even things at 13-13 with 3:35 left.
After getting the ball back with under a minute left and good field position from Jennings' return, Harrington and Crumpler connected for the game-winning touchdown moments later to silence the Carolina faithful.
Crumpler returned to Atlanta's lineup after missing the last two games with a knee injury.
With not much time left, the Panthers weren't able to move the ball as Chris Crocker picked off a pass late to seal the victory for Atlanta.
"I think the thing I'm most happy about is winning the game in the fourth quarter," said Atlanta head coach Bobby Petrino. "That's something we've been talking a lot about and working hard at it."
The Falcons took control early and went up 7-0 after Dunn ripped off a 30-yard touchdown run with 8:43 to play in the opening quarter. Dunn's score capped an eight-play, 70-yard drive.
Early in the second stanza, Carolina had a great opportunity to score but after making a catch close to the end zone down the left sideline, Smith fumbled the ball over the goal line and out of bounds, resulting in a touchback.
The Panthers finally managed to get on the board after Ken Lucas scooped up a fumble inside Atlanta territory and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 with 4:20 left in the second quarter.
After forcing Atlanta to punt on the ensuing possession, Kasay gave Carolina the lead heading into halftime after drilling a 29-yarder through the uprights as time expired in the first half.
The Falcons managed to score the only points of the third quarter as Andersen's 36-yard field goal with 3:24 to play tied the score at 10-10. The field goal gave Andersen 2,500 career points, making him the only player in NFL history to accomplish that feat.
