Colts move to 7-0 with win over Panthers
Manning throws 2 TDs to surpass Unitas on franchise career list
Manning threw 4 yards to running back Joseph Addai for his first touchdown, then hit wide receiver Reggie Wayne for 59 yards and the record-setting touchdown, the 288th of Manning's 10-year career.
The victory made the Colts (7-0) the second team in NFL history to open three consecutive seasons 7-0 or better and set up a showdown of the NFL's undefeated Super Bowl favorites. New England, 7-0 going into a late afternoon game with Washington, will visit the RCA Dome on Sunday for a meeting of the AFC rivals.
Green Bay also got off to starts of 7-0 or better from 1929-31. Manning finished with 14 completions in 30 attempts for 254 yards as a crowd of 70,707 watched on a mild, sunny day.
Addai scored touchdowns on runs of 2 and 12 yards as the Colts overcame a slow start. He rushed 23 times for 100 yards.
Forty-three-year-old Vinny Testaverde started for Carolina (4-3) but suffered an ankle injury during the first half and was replaced by David Carr opening the third quarter.
Testaverde was 12-of-20 for 82 yards with one interception. Carr was occasionally booed while completing 11 passes for 68 yards. The Colts got off to a halting start. Manning missed his first three passes and was 5-for-14 at halftime, although the Colts dropped three passes and might have caught two others.
Through 27 minutes, the Colts had gained a total of 39 yards on five possessions. Their lone points, a 20-yard Adam Vinatieri field goal, came after Carolina's Ryne Robinson fumbled a punt and Ramon Guzman recovered for the Colts.
Then the visitors broke loose. They took a punt at their own 14-yard line and drove 86 yards in 1:58 to take a 10-7 halftime lead. The big play was a Manning pass to Wayne for 32 yards to the Panthers 6. Running back Joseph Addai scored on a 2-yard run.
Carolina's first-half touchdown came on running back DeShaun Foster's 3-yard run.
