INDIANAPOLIS -- Calvin Johnson doesn't waste time putting what little concerns there are about him to rest.
After measuring in at 239 pounds at the Scouting Combine on Friday, creating a few questions about whether he would sacrifice speed at that size, Calvin Johnson went out and ran a blistering 4.35-second 40-yard dash on Sunday.
Calvin Johnson's was the third-fastest time during the morning session Sunday. Kansas State wide receiver Yamon Figures, a marginally draftable player, led the way at 4.30. Behind him was perhaps the biggest surprise in Washington State wide receiver Jason Hill, who turned in a very impressive 4.32.
Calvin Johnson was followed by Virginia Tech's David Clowney (4.36) and East Carolina's Aundrae Allison (4.39).
JARRETT HAS CONFIDENCE
Wide receivers have to be confident to be successful. That's a given. For that reason, it was no surprise to hear Southern Cal receiver Dwayne Jarrett talk about himself this weekend.
In a strong year for receivers, it was pointed out to Dwayne Jarrett that there could be six taken in the first round in April. Asked what makes himself better than Tennessee's Robert Meachem or Ohio State's Ted Ginn Jr., Dwayne Jarrett said, "Just look at my body of work. I won a national championship as a freshman. Sophomore year, we went back and lost. And then the Rose Bowl, we happened to win that game. I've been All-American two times, broke every record at USC, fourth in NCAA history in scoring touchdowns. I had 41. So look at the film."
As for who he models his game after Dwayne Jarrett mentioned Arizona Cardinals standout Larry Fitzgerald. Said Dwayne Jarrett, "Just coming out of high school he recruited me coming to Pittsburgh. We had a good relationship. I just like his whole style of game, the way he approaches the game, his body control, the way he goes up and gets the ball. I definitely model my approach after him."
When Dwayne Jarrett was told that Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson considers himself the best player in the draft, he responded, "I think everybody has their own opinion. I think my body of work speaks for itself."
But Dwayne Jarrett, who is the best player in the draft? "There's a lot of great players in the draft," he said. "He thinks he's the best and so be it. Let him think he's the best."
